In ihrer Serie „I used to look at the sky“ widmet sich Melina Papageorgiou den Straßen Berlins. Dabei nimmt sie weder deren räumlichen Kontext, die Bauten und Architekturen entlang der Straße, noch das Treiben auf diesen in den Blick. Die Fotografin interessiert sich ausschließlich für das Material: den Asphalt.

Mit Beginn der Pandemie treibt es Papageorgiou, wie die meisten Berliner*innen, nach draußen in die Parks und Straßen der Stadt. Sie unternimmt lange Erkundungszüge, die sie mit der Kamera festhält. Doch sind ihr Blick und die Kamera beim Umherstreifen gesenkt, denn ihre Aufmerksamkeit gilt dem asphaltierten Grund, auf dem sich ihre Bewegungen vollziehen.

Hier entdeckt Papageorgiou eine Individualität, die den allgemeinen Vorstellungen von Straßen zuwiderlaufen.InPapageorgious Bildernsindsiekeineswegseine eintönige graue Masse undauchkeine ebene, glatt planierte Fläche zur einfachen Fortbewegung. Viel eher sind sie grau-bunte, vom öffentlichen Ordnungswillen und Zufall gestaltete und komponierte Flächen. So gleichen in den Fotografien die auf den Asphalt angebrachten Linien und Piktogramme, die Spuren der Witterung und Abnutzung abstrakten Gemälden.

Melina Papageorgiou hat in Berlin an der Neuen Schule für Fotografie und an der Ostkreuz Schule studiert. Anschließend studierte sie in Hamburg Kommunikationsdesign mit Schwerpunkt Fotografie an der Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften. Sie war an zahlreichen Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland beteiligt.

In her series "I used to look at the sky" Melina Papageorgiou focuses on the streets of Berlin. In doing so, she neither takes into account their spatial context, the buildings and architecture along the street, nor the hustle and bustle on them. The photographer is only interested in the material: the asphalt.

With the onset of the pandemic, Papageorgiou, like most Berliners, was driven outside into the city’s parks and streets. She undertakes lengthy explorations, which she captures on camera. But her gaze and the camera are lowered as she roams, because her attention is focused on the asphalted ground on which her movements take place.

Here Papageorgiou discovers an individuality that goes against common notions of roads. In Papageorgiou's paintings, they are by no means his monotonous gray mass, nor are they a flat, smoothly graded surface for easy locomotion. Rather, they are grey-colored surfaces designed and composed by public order and coincidence. In the photographs, the lines and pictograms applied to the asphalt, the traces of weather and wear and tear resemble abstract paintings.

Melina Papageorgiou studied in Berlin at the New School for Photography and at the Ostkreuz School. She then studied communication design with a focus on photography at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. She has participated in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad.
